Call Break is the most popular card game in Nepal, also played widely in India as Lakdi or Ghochi. Four players each get 13 cards, call how many hands they will win, and spades are always trumps. Make your call and you score; fall short and you lose points.

How to play Call Break
- The whole deck is dealt: 13 cards to each of the four players.
- Each player calls how many hands (tricks) they expect to win, from 1 up to the maximum set in setup (8, 10 or 13).
- The player after the dealer leads. Everyone must follow the suit led if they can.
- If you can't follow suit you must play a spade (the trump) if you have one; otherwise play any card.
- The highest spade wins the hand; with no spades, the highest card of the suit led wins. The winner leads the next hand.
- After all 13 hands, scores are added up. Highest total after the last round wins.
Call Break scoring
- Win at least as many hands as you called and you score your call (call 4, score 4).
- Each hand won over your call adds 0.1 points (call 4, win 6, score 4.2).
- Win fewer hands than you called and you lose your call (call 4, win 3, score −4).
- Optional: calling 8 and winning 8 hands ends the game instantly.
- Optional: a player with no spades or no face cards can ask for a redeal.
Tips to win at Call Break
- Count spades. Thirteen are in play; knowing how many are left tells you when your high cards are safe.
- Call low with a weak hand. A small call you make beats a big one you miss.
- Run out of a short suit early so you can trump that suit later.
Call Break: common questions
Is Call Break the same as Spades?
They are close cousins. Both use spades as trumps and bidding, but in Call Break everyone plays for themselves (no partners), and you must trump with a spade whenever you can't follow suit.
How many rounds are in a game of Call Break?
