Chapter 1 of 5 · The Old Man and the Sea

Eighty-four days

Santiago is an old fisherman in a small village in Cuba. He has gone eighty-four days without catching a fish, and the other fishermen think he is finished.

A boy named Manolin loves him and once fished with him, but his parents made him join a luckier boat. The boy still brings Santiago food and talks with him about baseball. At night the old man dreams of lions on the beaches of Africa, which he saw as a young sailor.
