Death tells a story

The story is told by Death, who is tired of humans and their wars but fascinated by one girl, Liesel Meminger. In 1939, Liesel’s little brother dies on a train journey across Germany.

At his burial, a gravedigger drops a book in the snow. Liesel cannot read, but she takes it. It is the first book she steals.
