Bach opens with the story of Jim and Sue McIntyre, an ordinary couple with modest incomes who had nonetheless built real wealth and were on track to retire early. Their secret was not a high salary, a big inheritance or clever investing.

They had simply decided early on to pay themselves first, and to make it automatic. Bach builds the whole book around those two ideas.
