Chapter 1 of 5 · Homo Deus

Famine, plague and war

For most of history, humanity’s biggest problems were famine, plague and war. Harari argues that in the last century we have largely brought all three under control. They still happen, but they are no longer forces of nature beyond our power.

Today, he notes, more people die from eating too much than from hunger, and more die by suicide than in wars. This raises a new question: once the old problems are tamed, what will humans aim for next?
