Chapter 1 of 5 · Digital Minimalism

A philosophy of less

Newport defines digital minimalism as focusing your online time on a small number of carefully chosen activities that strongly support things you value, and happily missing out on everything else.

He argues that many apps are designed to capture as much attention as possible, using unpredictable rewards and our hunger for social approval. Tips and tweaks are not enough. You need a clear philosophy. He notes that the original iPhone was presented mainly as a better music player and phone, not as a constant companion; that role arrived later.
