A hard start
Goggins describes a childhood marked by violence. His father ran a roller rink in Buffalo, New York, made the family work there late into the night and beat his mother and him. Eventually his mother escaped with him to a small town in Indiana.
There he faced racism, fell badly behind at school and cheated to get by. He was carrying fear, shame and insecurity, and he says nothing could change until he faced them honestly.
